Student Resource websites
Resources:
- DLESE Digital Library for Earth Science. I use this website to find grade level appropriate resources, such as activities, labs, animations, pictures and virtual field trips in any area of earth science. The beauty of this site is it compiles information from over 37 different locations to make it easy to find just what you need to add to your lessons.
- US Geologic Survey Provides a wealth of resources such as maps, lessons plans, summaries of research, and current events with even more links to resources that will enhance activities that show earth processes.
- Alphabetical Earth Science Animations I use this site because of the many different animations available to show students the difficult to conceptualize topics, such as precession, or convection. Many of the animations are short, so they fit nicely into lessons before a lab experience.
- Discover Our Earth From Cornell University, using primary data accumulated from geospatial data. Guided inquiry labs about earthquakes, volcanoes, topography, plate tectonics, and sea level change.
- Topographic Maps and More Topozone is a great place to find real topo maps to teach about the basics of topo map reading and interpretation. I like to use actual maps that kids can read, ranging from faraway places to their own backyard including relief maps. hiking maps, surface features and photos.
- EurekAlert Great current events on a wide range of topics that can be understood by high school students, used for informing kids about developments in science
- The Animated Virtual Planetarium Great site for showing motions of the planets and their satellites. Shows ecliptic and side views of motion to help understand rotation and revolution concepts, with a glossary and geology- linked pages
- Earthweek I use this site to discuss the many and varied earth events that occur worldwide. Former weeks are archived for users.
- Earth Science Picture of the Day Begin class with a great photo to discuss with your class. If you miss a day, all the photos are archived. Great to compile examples of specific processes. Explanations are interesting and easy to understand for kids.
- Weatherwise Loaded with some really cool applets on a wide variety of topics in weather. Many allow students to change variables and see the effect of the change on weather systems
