Weekly Team Newsletter

May 1,2009

Dear Parents:

The date is fast approaching for the deadline for payment for the NYC trip. We want to let you know we have about two weeks left before we make the calls with the final numbers for the venues. If you have not sent in the money and are intending on spending the day with us, please mark your calendar to remit payment.

We have spoken to the kids on the team about the growing number of children who are either not completing the HW or handing in poor quality work. We know this is a busy season for outdoor extra curricular activities, but hope that the children continue to focus on producing quality work as we finish teaching our required curriculum

For the last Scholastic book order, someone paid $18 for a 6-pack of books entitled Baseball Card Adventure Set.  There is no name on the order form and none of our students claimed it (although many kids want it!).  Please let Mrs. Wetmore know if you wrote out a check in the amount of $18 to Scholastic so I can get you/your child the books!

In social studies, we’ve spent the past week focusing on document-based questions and how they consist of scaffolding questions, constructed responses and essays.  Students will be exposed to many DBQs in 7th and 8th grade, and need to be familiar with the language used when analyzing DBQs.  On Friday, students had a quiz on DBQs and on Monday students will have an actual DBQ to take as a test.  The content is on Ancient Rome, the last unit of study in social studies.

We are putting the finishing touches on our feature articles in language arts class.  The students have worked hard on these writing pieces with their research, peer and teacher conferencing, revising and editing.  The revised due date for the final draft is Tuesday, May 5th.

In Science we watched a really cool DVD entitled “Amazing Caves”, about the hunt for extreme microorganisms in different types of caves, and their usefulness in developing new drugs. We have seen examples of weathering around our school, and next week will begin observing minerals and rocks and discuss how they are important resources to our society. If you have some interesting mineral and rocks samples around your home, please send them in with your child and we will all try and identify them!

In Math we have taken the assessment in Geometry, and will review integers and coordinate graphing next week.

This weekend looks rainy, the better for some new grass to grow. We hope it doesn’t put a damper on your weekend plans. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We appreciate all the support you give your children to enable them to be successful sixth graders!

Regards,

Kim and Rose
