Question of the Week #1
Posted by drakesci | Under Question of The Week Wednesday Sep 3, 2008The first topic of study involves investigating what Earth science is really all about, and what subtopics Earth science encompasses. We learned that Earth has “spheres”.
What effect do you have on Earth systems? Which sphere do you live on and what are some ways you change the spheres? Are these behaviors beneficial or detrimental to Earth?
Write a response to this post that includes all parts of the question. Read the previous posts and tell if you agree or disagree with previous student responses.
Well we live on the lithosphere and we affect the world systems by polluting the air (atmosphere) by car fumes for example. Polluting the atmosphere is obviously detrimental to the environment.
The earth itself is a sphere, which is broken up into many other layers of spheres inside it. The sphere we live on is earth’s crust which is the lithosphere. The air that surrounds us is the atmosphere. All the living things such as people, plants, animals and trees are part of the biosphere.
I pollute the atmosphere (“Air Space”) when I use aerosol hairspray which damages the ozone over time. So this behavior is detrimental to the earth. One thing i do that’s beneficial to the earth is recycling.
I agree with the first comment when they were talking about how car fumes pollute the air. I also agree that we live on the lithosphere.
Global Warming is a way that we effect Earth’s systems. We live on the lithospere. Global Warming is detrimental to the enviroment. Who is ags815965

We live on the lithosphere and one effect we have on the Earth that is detrimental is when we litter.
We effect the Earth by our life style/way of life. The sphere we live on is the lithosphere.
I think that it is both benificial and detrimental because now people are making an effort to recycle, which is beneficial. But we also pollute the air which is detrimental. I agree with all of the other answers.
we affect the Earth in so many ways…. ways that people dont even think of. i bet you dont even know that it takes a single peice of gum 5 years to decompose and you could only chew it for 5 minutes. we live in the lithoshpere. we also drive cars all around even around the corner poluting the air to lengths we do not realize with is detrimental. and i agree with everyone above me.
We live in the lithosphere. We affect the earth by polluting the water. When the water gets polluted, less things can live in it and it effect our whole lives, because then things that eat the fish die, and it starts a whole cycle.
First of all we live in the Lithospere and the sphere we live on is the crust. In many ways I pollute the air by driving to firends houses when I could ride a bike. Something beneficial I allways do is never use a hand dryer or paper towels when I dry my hands. I dry them by just waving them through the air. I also love to recycle and reuse things (like folders). In some ways I do pollute the atmosphere but I try to leave as little of a footprint as I can. As of the above posts I totally agree with all of them.
We (humans) have the effect of pollution on the environment. Two types of pollution are wood burning and upsetting the natural balance for our “need” to control our environment. (when the animal/plant ratio is unbalanced)
We live on the lithosphere layer of the Earth. That is composed of all of our oceans and land masses.
Some ways that we, as people change the spheres is by causing less pollution of carbon into our atmosphere. When we add more carbon to the air, everything slowly gets hotter. Therefore melting glaciers, therefore causing ocean levels to rise, therefore changing the lithosphere.
Our behaviors of pollution are very detrimental to the Earth. This is causing environmental problems to our world such as temperature change. Our behaviors of reusing and recycling our natural resources is very beneficial to the Earth. We only have so many natural resources, and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. So we really have to help the Earth and ourselves by recycling and reusing our natural resources.
I agree with all of the peoples above me.
Oh, and I burn wood when I use our fireplace during the winter, I add more carbon to the air by driving in a car everyday with my mom to school for a half hour, and I always try to recycle whenever I can.
I still agree with everyone above me and we do live on the lithosphere.
(sorry, lol. I kind of messed up on my first try I think…I thought “you” meant more like, people in general…well…I did both…idk…)
We live on the lithosphere or crust of the Earth. We affect Earth systems a lot. One way I change the spheres is that me and my family planted trees in our yard. This is beneficial because by planting trees it creates more oxygen for the earth and for us to breath. Another way I change the spheres is that I let the water run for about ten minutes before I get in the shower. This is detrimental because I’m wasting natural resources. Lastly I agree with all the other posts.
We live in the lithosphere. And we do a lot that hurts the earth, like we buy plastic bags when we go to the grocery stores. When we can easily just buy canvas bags to reuse.
Now that I read other people’s posts I guess it meant you as in you. Like not you as in the people on Earth. So I affect the Earth in a positive way because instead of throwing out left over food I eat it for lunch the next day. I pollute the Earth in some ways also. One way is that when I put something down the garbage disposal I use warm water which uses more energy than cold water.
I agree with all the other posts about living on the lithosphere. Almost everything I do changes the earth in some way. From buying a pencil made out of non-renewable plastic to carpooling to earth science, everything changes the spheres in ways too complex to see. I do a mix of things that affect the environment. Some, like using plastic containers, are detrimental, while others like picking up litter around my neighborhood on Sunday improve things.
All humans live in the lithosphere. Most of the humans including me damages the environment/ atmosphere by chopping down trees to make paper and tables, ect. It damages the atmosphere by not making oxygen and asorbing co2. But i have to chop down the tree or else if it collapse during a storm, its going to crash into the house we just move into and kill us all… but i try to open all the curtains instead of turning on the lights in the house… i love big windows.
iforgot to say that i also open windows on different sides of the house instead of turning on fans so the air circulations can go through creating breezes inside the house… it saves a lot of electricity!
The Earth has many different spheres. The lithosphere, I agree is one of them. I also agree with a comment above that there is the atmosphere and the crust. The Earth also has different hemispheres. Like we live in the Northern hemisphere. Each hemisphere has different changes going on to the environment. In the Northern hemisphere where we live, green house gases are emitted a thousand time a day. I pollute the earth, buy driving to all different places and using up a lot of gas. That is emitting a lot of carbon dioxide into our air which is detrimental. I also pollute the lithosphere, on which we live buy sometimes being lazy. For example, at cheerleading practice we are not allowed to have gum. Sometimes I forget to spit mine out and instead of running to the trash can, I spit in out on the grass. This is detrimental, because like a comment above says, it takes 5 years for gum to decompose and I’m also littering which is very bad and harmful to our lithosphere and the animals and creatures around it. On way I do benefit our Earth and it’s spheres is by starting to compost. When we have leftover food in my house, we try to remember to but stuff that has rotted and things into a compost bile in our backyard where it decomposes into the ground. This is a lot better than throwing the food into the trashcan because the old food at a dump is burned and puts harmful fumes and chemicals like carbon dioxide back into the air, when you compost the food just decomposes naturally back into the soil. We also recycle which is beneficial to the Earth. I agree with all the comments above. I especially agree with the fact that we change the Earth’s spheres by the way we live and our life style because people have different cultures and different beliefs. Sometimes those beliefs and the things they do differently can be beneficial or detrimental.
We live on the lithosphere. Litho meaning rock. So I guess we live in a sphere of rock…ness.
I damage the earth’s atmosphere because I eat hamburgers. And hamburgers are made from cows (and other substances that should remain unknown). And cows are evil because, well, they fart. And they burp. Therefore they contribute to why there is a big hole in the atmosphere right above Antarctica.
So I conclude:
Cows are evil. But we eat cows, and hamburgers, the evilness flows down to us. So we must blame cows! But if we stop eating so many hamburgers (americans eat 14 million a year!!!), the cow popoulation will slowly decrease, meaning less cow fart! And that will benefit our enviornment, and help farmers breathe more easily.
(I agree with what everyone else posted)
The earth has many different layers. We live in what is called the lithosphere. I help save our planet by doing simple things such as shutting a light when I leave a room or unplugging my phone charger when I am not using it. I also am damaging our Earth though. Every day I bring lunch I use a paper bag which is wasting the trees on our planet. ~ I also agree with the posts above, with the exception that I do not believe cows are evil, for they give us manure and that fertilizes our Earth~
The earth has several different spheres. We live in the lithosphere. I have a small effect on the earths systems, but that doesn’t mean that what I do doesn’t matter or change the earth, because it does. Everything I do effects the earth in someway. If we combine our positive efforts, together we can preserve what’s left of our earths natural resourses. As an individual human being, I try to do what I can to do my part. I use a lunch bag, tupperware and I don’t use plastic utensils and I try not to use plastic bags and plastic water bottles. These changes are positive/benefitial to the earth. After reading the previous posts, I don’t belive cows are evil, but they do release harmful pollutants into the air. They do indeed give us manure and food(I do agree with the post above that Lindsay said previously.)
The earth has many different layers, but we live on the lithosphere. Because if we didn’t… then we would all probably die. Humans change the sphere by protecting and destroying it… but mostly destroying. Humans are helping the earth every time we recycle our old junk so someone else can enjoy it… and we destroy our planet by littering, smoking, driving cars that aren’t exactly eco-friendly, and doing other who knows what. I don’t exactly agree with Justina, because cows give us a lot of OTHER things that we need such as milk. And cheese. Wait;;; milk and cheese come with wrappers/bottles that are harmful to the environment… so never mind. Go Justina!
I agree with everyone that our earth has different layers and the layer that we live on is the lithosphere. I help the earth in different ways and i harm the earth in different ways. One way i help the earth is that my family washes plastic utensils instead of throwing them away so we can keep reusing them. One way that i hurt the earth is I forget to unplug things when I’m not using them like my ipod doc i leave that plugged in all the time I also leave alot with lights still left on but i usaly shut them off. I agree with everyone above except that cows do help fertilizes the earth. And julia you can recycle milk bottles and cheese somtimes comes in tupperware type things that you can recycle
I agree with everyone else that we live on the lithosphere. Almost everyting we do effects the earth weather it makes the earth a little more cleaner or it makes it more polluted. some of the beneficial thigns that we do are, planting trees, recylcing, and turning off the lights. But we also do a lot of detrimental things such as, using a lot of gas, wasting water, not recycling etc.
so… this post is wicked cool.
